Anatomy of an Isolation

Marlena Morris presents, Anatomy of an Isolation
Preview viewing Tuesday, 24 April @ 4:30-6:30
Marlena Morris uses the camera lens to investigate the physical and psychological isolation of Coatbridge, an historic mining community in the suburbs of Glasgow, Scotland. Through a poignant interrogation of Coatbridge’s physical space, Morris captures the complex history and culture of the region.  While the images allude to a sense of nostalgia associated with externalized towns struggling to build identities commensurate with a post-industrial age, they simultaneously celebrate the wealth of historic narrative upon which these communities draw.

Gigs

I became interested in photography through the punk scene in the East Bay (SF), where i photographed my surroundings, which included hanging around with friends and going to gigs. Lots and lots of gigs. My first photographs were shot on black & white film in low-light conditions on an old Nikon camera. I learned how to take a photograph and make it interesting whilst half drunk in the depths of The Gilman.

A decade later, I am resurrecting my gig photography for two primary reasons. One, I love going to gigs and miss them, being too poor to go to as many as I’d like. Two, being poor, I’d like to make some extra cash, and what else is more awesome than being paid to go to a gig (being paid to play one!). So, if you or anyone you know needs a gig photographer for any reason, please spread the word and contact me via this wordpress.

Renovation

I’ve managed to capture a few images of the destruction of this ‘listed’ building in Glasgow over the course of several weeks with my ipod, so apologies for the low-fi quality of these images
. This was the site of the former Buchannan Hotel, built in 1840 (thanks google) and generally a really cool building to look at whilst walking down the retail hell that is now Buchannan street.

Demolished to make way for luxury flats ( just what Glasgow needs), a third Gap, and shiny new Forever 21. What country am I living in again?

Dear Internet Wilderness

I suppose this is my Official Website (™) to document my ‘Art,’ whatever Art means these days. I’ll mostly post photos, works in progress and various portfolios, plus some short peices of writing. Don’t really know if anyone will actually look at this, but it’s really something to do.
